Before you buy an app-connected sex toy

The product is not just the hardware. The app, account, permissions and cloud service are part of what you are buying.

What you’ll getA checklist for apps, accounts, Bluetooth, data sharing and what happens when support ends.

Start with the minimum-data question

Ask what the product can do without creating an account. Some connected products require registration, cloud access or persistent app permissions for functions that could otherwise be local. The more intimate the data, the more important it is to understand whether collection is necessary.

What Feeling Adult checks

Remote control changes the risk model

A product that can be controlled remotely creates a different set of risks than a stand-alone device. Authentication, session sharing, revocation of partner access and what happens when credentials are compromised all matter. “Encrypted” by itself is not enough information to judge the system.

Shared phones and notifications

Privacy failures can be mundane. Lock-screen notifications, app names, Bluetooth device names, purchase receipts and shared app-store histories can reveal intimate information even when the underlying service is technically secure. Review these settings before assuming the product is discreet.

Cloud dependence is a durability issue too

If core features depend on a company’s servers, a discontinued app or shuttered service can reduce the usefulness of otherwise functional hardware. Feeling Adult treats this as both a privacy and product-longevity issue.

Our review standard

For connected products, we will link to the vendor’s current privacy policy and record whether an account is required. We will distinguish what we independently verified from what the company merely claims. Product-specific pages will also include separate US and Canadian purchase options.
